You’ve decided your room will look its absolute best with a set of fabric curtains, but with every window treatment, there are several options to choose from. To get the decision just right, it may be a bit time consuming, but here are some factors to keep in mind when picking the perfect drapery or curtains for your windows.
Fabric and Color
Drapery should always compliment or enhance a room. The room in question may already have a certain style, expressed by furniture pieces and other decorative items, so follow a color scheme or make up a new one! Fabric best used for curtains and drapery includes linen, silk, faux silk, and velvet, as these tend to hang and fall the best. Be aware of how heavy the fabric you choose is. If it’s too much, or even too little weight, it will not fold and hang properly, robbing the interior design of its intended look.
Length
The length of curtains can dramatically change the look of a room. Decide if you want to hang curtains at a natural height, or just a bit higher. Tip: Curtains hung higher can make a room look taller! Curtains are hung an average of six inches above the window frame, but you have lots of wiggle room depending on your desired style. Add a few inches at the bottom of your window length for the ‘puddled’ look, and add four to eight inches on the windows perimeter if you plan to bunch drapes for a ‘fullness’ effect. This will also help block out any unwanted sunlight.
